Ohio Industrial Design Student Wins Grand Prize in Luraline's "It's Your Light" Student Design Competition
Industrial design student Bryan K. Johnson won Luraline's third annual “It's Your Light” student design competition for a creative twist on parking area lighting that puts the spotlight on public safety.
Johnson, 30, of the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio, took top honors for “CenterLine,” a versatile outdoor lighting fixture for installation in parking lots and garages.
“The inspiration for ‘CenterLine’ stems from the idea of added security and safety for poorly lit parking lots and public garages,” Johnson said. “The design is styled so the internal fluorescent bulbs cast light between individually parked automobiles from the ground, wall or ceiling.”
The contest jury, made up of architecture, engineering and lighting industry professionals, chose “CenterLine” from more than 150 entries received from design and architecture schools and universities across the country. Johnson received a $1,500 cash prize.
“There is a demand in the commercial market for more imaginative and attractive outdoor lighting fixtures,” Luraline President Howard Levine said. “The jury was impressed with the uniqueness of Mr. Johnson’s concept, as well as its potential applications.”
In addition, the judges recognized three runners up in the competition: Jonas Concepcion, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York; Adrienne Hathaway of the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore; and Mary Sanders Ferriss of Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss.
The annual “It’s Your Light” competition solicits original design concepts for lighting fixtures from design and architecture students throughout the U.S. The 2004-2005 edition of the contest will be announced in September 2004.
