Contest Theme: "High-Performance Lighting"
Following the many developments in energy-efficient light sources over recent years, we are now asking students to design the next generation of high-performance lighting fixtures.
The lighting fixtures getting the most attention in the industry today provide a complete lighting solution by incorporating eco-efficient light sources, then using them to their best advantage by maximizing usable light while minimizing waste. High-performance lighting is both efficient and effective, giving the user the ability to aim, direct and adjust light levels and distribution in order to save energy and address environmental concerns such as light pollution (excess light). Students should investigate lighting controls such as photocells, motion/occupancy sensors, and computerized systems; cut-off fixture designs; and techniques for increasing/enhancing usable light while minimizing light trespass by means of improved reflectors, refractors and other optics.
Lighting fixtures may be designed for any commercial interior or exterior application, with the lamping or light source deemed most appropriate.
Judging will be based on maximization of performance and efficiency; best choice of light sources, reflectors and optics; materials and construction methods; quality of technical data and presentation; and of course, creativity and originality of the design.
